Healthy Pigs Culled Two Days Before Possible Vaccination PDF Print E-mail

Numerous examples of cruelty and bungling can illustrate the idiocy and incompetence that has characterized Korea's massive FMD cull this January.

Take, for example, how animals that were missed by the rush to cull were left to wander the countryside, infected or not. This time it was a government order to cull perfectly healthy pigs on January 13, two days before mass vaccinations throughout the country. This is stupidity bordering on madness.

When KARA heard about it, members rushed to the farm to plead for a stay of execution, urging all involved there to simply wait for two days. But nothing could stop the cull machinations, so they pleaded for the use of humane injections to euthanize the pigs. That was also rejected. All they could do was watch. Fortunately, the farmer allowed filming on the provision that he and the farm would remain anonymous.

To add to the stress of KARA protesters, this sow had given birth the day before. Her and her family were all killed.

There were 70 pigs at this farm and all individuals had a name.

This is a typical herding method at culls.

One piglet escaped and KARA members willed it to hide. They did not say anything but the piglet was found by cull workers and it went along to die with its family.

You will see this scene in the video. The men are laughing and joking. Those at the back are amused by pigs playing behind them. Others are remarking on the sow, commenting on how strong and tough she is and how difficult it will be to handle her. It is almost with exasperation that they say this.

Pause for a moment and consider this. The workers cannot get a sow onto the truck because she is so strong and healthy, free of disease, and yet she is destined to be culled. This is just madness.

In fact, the sow was deemed so big and strong, a blow dart was used to paralyse her. This only adds to the cruelty of her death because she is fully conscious but cannot move a muscle.

Her legs buckle underneath her.

Drugs are also given to pigs on the truck.

The paralysed sow. She will be tipped into the hole like this with no ability to right herself or somehow break her fall. This utterly contemptible barbarity towards animals has occurred widely during the cull.

Jan11_organic_pigs_cull12

As the truck manoeuvres the pigs are thrown into a pile.

Jan11_organic_pigs_cull13

The truck is ready to leave for the burial pit. This, by the way, is a garbage truck.

Jan11_organic_pigs_cull14

The pigs go to their doom.

And below is how the pigs once were and how they would be still if it wasn't for government stupidity--free from cruelty, at least on the farm, and living a happy life with their families.

Thank you to the brave activists in Korea who are standing up for the rights of innocent animals. Know that there are many of us around the world who feel as you do and who feel empathy for the unimaginable suffering and terror of these animals that are buried alive.

The images of live pigs being dumped like garbage into pits and piled on top of each other 3 and 4 deep utterly reduced me to tears. Then when the dirt covers them and they struggle to breathe, finding no air but only dirt filling their mouths and throats, how terrified, desperate and agonized they must feel. Truly this is a very sad event for all of planet earth to witness such horrors being visited upon millions of animals.

I cannot understand why the animals are not killed quickly and humanely if they must be killed, why are they made to suffer for hours in a burial pit? The moaning and screams of these animals must be heard for miles around.

My heart is breaking.
