kara-chobok-2011-11

This year's summer campaign began outside Seoul Station on a humid day, with rain threatening overhead. More actions are planned around Seoul in coming days at Jongro, Insadong, Gangnam, Yeoido and Youngdeungpo.

This year KARA put together leaflets, banners, posters, information boards, bag giveaways and video for a huge LCD screen on the side of a truck. The banner read "Tears of Bok Day- Hug Them, Don’t Eat Them"

Special appearances were made by a well-known dog named Emily and several other dogs who were rescued from dog farms.

The theme was broader this year, incorporating not just an anti-dog meat protest but a call to adopt a more compassionate, vegetarian diet because of the suffering of animals on factory farms.

KARA's director in the black shirt below hands out watermelon to passers by. It's a nice way to keep cool and was presented as an alternative to the Sambok tradition of eating dog soup. Other alternatives were suggested in posters.

Here's the no-meat shopping bag that was handed out!

Details printed on the bag say it is to promote a reduction in meat eating in consideration of farm animals who suffer on factory farms. It also notes that excessive meat consumption is responsible for widespread heart and other chronic diseases.

Part of the campaign was to broadcast a protest message while the video played on the big screen. The video show abuses on factory farms, such as chicks being de-beaked and piglets being castrated without anesthetic.

Some of the images used for the protest were graphic, including in-your-fact photos of dogs being hung.

Some people discovered for the first time that dogs on dog farms never get to touch the ground until led out of their cages to be hung or electrocuted.

A number of the girls handed out information pamphlets and it was good to see people take a genuine interest. There are a couple of guys in the image below, engrossed in what the pamphlet has to say.

Seoul Station is of course an incredibly busy transport hub so a huge number of people got the message.

Thanks guys for another successful campaign!
