As the image shows, the Korea Animal Rescue and Management Association (KARMA), which runs a government kill-shelter, featured a young bull among the usual array of dog pictures on January 19.
It was easy to presume that the bull, hardly older than a calf, had been abandoned near Seoul by one of the farmers recenlty protesting about low beef prices. In fact, the bull was found at Cheong Wa Dae where the farmers had protested. So much for farmers always claiming they love and treat their cattle like children.
Information on the KARMA site said that the bull will be euthanized after 10 days from the post by the law if a new home is not found.
After learning of this, KARA set out to find a home where the young bull can enjoy the rest of his life in safety. Luckily, a farm was found whose owner has 5 other cattle, none of which are for commercial purposes.
We have submitted an adoption application to KARMA and will wait their response.
Update: Feb. 24, 2012
Since submitting an adoption application, KARA has been involved in discussions with the Korea Animal Rescue and Management Association (KARMA), the Jongro District Council, and Korea Farmers Association (KFA).
It appears that KFA contacted Jongro Council to obtain the right to take the young bull, since it was left by a farmer.
Since the bull was found in its district, the decision rested with the Jongro Council. The Council decided that it makes sense for the KFA to take the bull because it is a farm animal (and the meaning here is that the bull should be taken for later processing into meat).
In addition, the council felt that the animal is not usually one handled by animal groups for adoption. This is strange because KARMA handle the case exactly as it would for an abandoned dog and advertised the bull on the abandoned dog website!
The result, then, is that the Jongro Council considers the bull only worthy of being turned into meat.
It is a very disappointing result, with a lack of respect shown for animals by the local council. KARA sent them a letter expressing how regrettable the decision was.
