Notes

May, 2005

Eumsung County, North Choongchung- Province

The owner of this big scale dog farm quit his job in 2004 to take over the farm. He is winding down the operation due to lack of business and is going back to work a normal job.

The owner feels that in order to be competitive with other dog farm, a farmer needs to keep at least one thousand dogs for sale.

When the owner was asked if he was willing to increase his number of dogs, he said that not only was raising dogs difficult, the neighbors complained of noise they made as well.

He had also developed “Lifting Cages” with a development company, but due to lack of business, he has not been able to make money from them.

The owner stressed that he was quitting the business as soon as he can.

Mainly Nurongies were raised and kept in cages. Food waste was fed to the dogs because providing the dogs with dog food was too costly.

This ranch does not participate in the slaughtering of dogs but only sells them according to weight. The going price last winter was $2.20 per pound. (Dogs that weighed around 30 pounds were sold at $55.00.) The current market price is $3.20 per pound of dog meat.

The owner reiterated that as soon as he gets rid of the remaining 60 dogs, he will give up the dog business.
