Aesin Shelter: Like a Shanty Town with 800 Residents PDF Print E-mail

On March 11, 2012, the KARA volunteer medical team, along with other volunteers, visited Aesin Shelter, located approx. 90 minutes drive outside of Seoul.

This ramshackle place has a large population of about 700 – 800 animals. The shelter reminded volunteers of a little village because it was spread across the hillside, with many fences off and tarp covered spaces, depending on the size of animals, breed and age.

It was a cold morning up in the hills, as the medteam were setting up.

mar2012-medteam-aesin-2

Then got to work. As well as neutering the dogs had a range of medical problems that needed attending to.

Then the dogs were left to recover.

And sleep it off.

While the medical team performed neutering, other volunteers cleaned up and feed the dogs.

In this picture, you can see the slope of the hill and how rocky some parts of it were.

mar2012-medteam-aesin-4

Many dogs here don't have much previous experience with humans, so it was very difficult to handle a lot of them. It took a while to catch each male dog and avoid being bitten.

Other dogs were really happy to have human company.

And there were cats too!

After a morning's work, it was time for lunch. Noodles!

One luck girl! This volunteer decided to take this lucky girl home. Her shelter days are over!

Thank you to all who joined our volunteer medical team.

On February 19, 2012, KARA's volunteer medical team visited the Hope Shelter.

The dogs here have all been rescued from dog meat farms, from the government shelter (which allows only 10 days for adoption before euthanasia), and from being abandoned in the streets.

There are a lot of dogs compared to the size of the shelter, and that causes quarrels and conflicts.

Many animals were found to have bad skin, and so volunteers focused on washing and shaving the dogs.

feb2012-medteam-hope-8

This little one is pretty blind yet is still adorable.

feb2012-medteam-hope-18

There were a few big dogs there as well.

feb2012-medteam-hope-6

The medical team got to work, spaying and neutering.

Another happy customer.

All the dogs loved getting lots of attention from us.

feb2012-medteam-hope-1

So many dogs are stuck at the shelter, but KARA is trying to find them all the forever homes they deserve.

Well done everyone.
