Yeonpyung Island, located north-west of Seoul on the coast, is the island North Korea attacked with artillery on November 23, 2010, killing 4 people. After that, residents abandoned the island and basically left it deserted, that is, except for the animals they couldn't take with them.

Food on the way.
KARA made inquiries about the animals left on Yeonpyung Island, and then after a delay because of weather, volunteers headed to the island on November 30 with food and medicines.
Up to the point, a government worker and other animal rights groups had been giving animals food and water.
They found Yeonpyung Island in a mess with the recent shelling damage everywhere.

Numerous animals had been abandoned and were waiting for their owners to return, while others were wandering around the deserted streets.

There are a lot of abandoned dogs. The big dogs come out in the afternoon and spent it together on the streets and went back to their respective houses at night.
The volunteers tried their best to find the houses where dogs were staying so as to provide food and water and ensure that someone could check up on them.

There were quite a few different puppies on the loose so the volunteers brought them to a temporary shelter.

Later, the volunteers saw the mother looking for some of the puppies and reunited them.

Eventually they discovered where the dogs lived and gave them food and water and also cleaned the house.

Dogs were given shots to prevent any disease from spreading.

Other dogs were found and plenty of food was left for them.

This guy must now have enough to last him a week or more.

These 3 dogs were found tied up in a hopeless mess of wires and ropes that took a bit of work to untangle.

It's anyone's guess how long they have been like that.

Thes dogs were also put in the temporary shelter, which is pictured below. Originally, the plan was to use a school tennis ground as a temporary shelter, but the volunteers heard that the school intended to reopen when the all clear was given. They ended up making a shelter at a small area where there was a chili garden.

The sign just says that it's KARA's temporary animal shelter.
As well as dogs, there weren’t a lot of cats on the island, but volunteer team could only help four. A veterinarian advised that the cats should be allowed to roam freely instead of being taken to the shelter, and that food should be just put in different places.

This kitty looks like he's got soot over him. There was also a hamster found that had to be feed and a dog in a box.

In the end, the volunteers took these two, the hamster and the puppy, off the island with them.

Here are a couple of volunteers returning home after a job well done. Thanks guys!
