Gumi Shelter in March, 2010 PDF Print E-mail

KARA recently delivered 600 kg of food to the Gumi Shelter costing 1,000,000 won. The shelter manager wanted a small amount of good quality feed rather than a large amount of low quality feed. Low quality dog food can cause health problems like diarrhea or skin trouble. So KARA chose a high grade brand.

The bean pictured on top of the stack of food represents a happy bean from the Naver.com initiative. On Naver people can donate "beans" which are then turned into cash. Some of the food was paid for through online donations of "beans."

Not surprisingly, given the manager’s concern for her dogs, the shelter’s dogs are all well fed and well taken care of.

It may not look much but it is sheltered, clean and warm. During the day the dogs can run around the grounds and at night they bed down in their separate cages. The woman cleans the dogs and cuts their hair, and she cleans and maintain their environment. The dogs were certainly healthy looking.

There is an online support café for the shelter, but it does not always offer continuous support. That means the dogs sometimes don’t eat so well. Another problem is that the dogs need to be moved out of the house soon, so there are plans to build a large dog house next door to the present house.

Here are the dogs, in cages for the night by a warm heater. Most of these are abandoned dogs.

Here are the guys on the other side of the heater.

The manager said she was very happy for the food. She is getting old and taking care of so many dogs is proving difficult.

She takes in dogs she finds roaming the streets, abandoned. She tries to find the owners if she can. But the numbers are growing and she is running out of space.

There is also a cat room. They didn't want to come out and show themselves.

Three dogs live with the manager. They are quite old and small. All of them seemed like over 10 years.

This guy is pretty old and sick, so the manager is worried about him.

When the manager met this lady, she was young with lots of roundworms in her stomach. The manager treated and now she stays indoors rather than with the other dogs.

Thanks a lot to everyone for donating beans.
