Nanum Garden Food Bank PDF Print E-mail

A lot of animals are living rough out in the streets. Human beings have reduced animals to this condition. So, it is a human responsiblity to fix the problem.

To this end, KARA opened a service called Nanum Garden to cater for abandoned companions and shelter animals. It is essential a food bank that we hope will always be abundant.

The Role of Nanum Garden

Nanum Garden staff gather information on private shelters scattered around Korea and search for ways to help them. Private shelters are a useful alternative and an additional option to public shelters. So it is essential they are supported.

Rescue and rehabilitation of dogs is such an important role of private shelters because of the special needs in Korea created by dog eating. Private shelters assist not only in helping rescued dogs and giving them a new life, but they also contributed to the prohibition campaign against the eating of dogs.

These private shelters also help raise more awareness of animal welfare and care and increase the possibilities of adoption in communities.

It should be emphasized here that we are only talking about "no kill" shelters. The dogs in the private shelters KARA deals with are not euthanized. KARA has a strict "no kill" policy.

How to Participate

It's easy! Just send us pet food and stuff, as you see in the pictures! Here are some examples of what we can accept:

  1. Pet foods and snacks which have been opened (only solids in this case).
  2. Gifts or samples sometimes given by shopping malls - even a little soon amounts to a lot.
  3. Share some of the food you give your companions at home. Just put it in a zipper bag or clean bag.
  4. Food within 3 months after its expiration date. (Shopping malls often have goods on sale because they have passed their expiration date.)
  5. Canned food, unopened "wet" foods, blankets, medical supplies, etc.

Important notes:

  • If using sealing food in unmarked packages, please note down the brand name and due date so its condition can be assessed easily.
  • We would apprecidate if you pay delivery fees up front. Please consider the postage or delivery fee as part of the donation.

Breakdown of Distribution

Here are some examples of collection drives:

1st - 138.25 kg of grain was collected for 6 days and distributed to 7 shelters

2nd - 169.02 kg of grain was collected for 5 days and distributed to 9 shelters.

3rd  - 214.39 kg of grain was collected for 14 days and distributed to 8 shelters.

4th  - 238.215 kg of grain was collected for 8 days and distributed to 11 shelters.

5th  - 109.7 kg of grain was collected for 8 days and distributed to 6 shelters.

6th  - 163.36 kg of grains was collected for 14 days and distributed to 10 shelters.

That comes to a total 1,039,235 kg of grain collected, and that amount excludes the weight of cans and snacks. Isn't that great? We are so happy to have been helped by so many warm families.

From 08-06-2004 to 16-09-2008 we have made a total of 26 distribution trips. In the beginning, we made trips every other week, but now for efficiency it is done once a month or every other month.
