The donation total as of December 2011 was around $1,000 US, which is approximately 1,130,000 in Korean won.

Half of this money has gone towards medical treatment for some of the 70 dogs rescued from eviction in Suwon. Read about their story here.

These dogs are now living in a new shelter constructed with KARA's assistance. You can read about the construction efforts here.

The other half of the donation funds went towards food for the Yongin shelter. The delivery is pictured below.

maseok-food-1

The Yongin Shelter is small and in disrepair. However, KARA's volunteer medical team visited there recently to perform some surgeries, shave dogs, put in weather proofing and generally clean things up. For a closer look at Yongin Shelter, see here.

2011 Mid-Year Donation Total Goes to Three Causes PDF Print E-mail

The donation total as of July 2011 came to just over $1,000 US. That's over 1,000,000 won.

The KARA English site used exactly 1,000,000 won of that amount to contribute to 3 different causes.

1. KARA's Annual Anti-Dog Meat Campaign

The annual anti-dog meat campaign was larger and more diverse in 2011 and included a partnership with the US animal protection group In Defense of Animals. The KARA English site contributed 400,000 won towards this cause.

Info and pictures of the summer campaign for 2011 can be found at Protests & Actions.

2. The Rehabilitation of Sebok Somang

We decided to apportion 300,000 won towards the cost of this girls's vet bills and nursing back to health.

Sebok1

On July 9, 2011, the first day of KARA's summer campaign, Saebok was found by KARA volunteers wandering around and apparently abandoned. She was sick and weak and also injured. It's unlikely she would have lasted much longer on the streets.

See here for more about Saebok.

Update: August 25, 2011

It is our regret to say that Saebok was unable to regain her strength and died on August 19. The kindly vet said that we would not have to pay a vet bill.

Therefore, we have decided to put the donation funds of 300,000 towards the vet bill for treatement of Somang, the dog pictured below, who was rescued by KARA. Somang was subjected to 40 minutes of abuse and stoning from two construction workers.

See here for more about Somang.

3. Godol's Vet Bills

The remainder of the donations, 300,000 won, has gone towards the cost of veterinary care for Godol.

godol2

He's doing fine now but not so long ago, he didn't have that long to live.

In May, the KARA office received a report of a horribly beaten stray cat. She was found with a badly disfigured face and was immediately taken to a vet.

godol1

Someone had beaten his face so badly that one of his cheekbones had collapsed. Godol, as he was named, had an operation and after that, thanks to the support of many people, he was happily settled into a new home.

godol3

He's gone from tragedy to paradise.

But KARA has not let it rest. The scum who abused Godol is still out there somewhere. So, flyers were posted in the area where he was found and with any luck we might get some info and be able to prosecute his attacker.

Emergency Funds Used For Suni's Rescue PDF Print E-mail

In March, 2011, the site donated 100,000 won towards getting a dog named Suni out of the life-time concrete hell hole she had been in for years. The funds went toward the various expenses involved.

Suni was rescued when she was perhaps a day away from being sold to a dog-meat trader.

The story, as told by her rescurer, can be found here.

Three Causes Given Aid in January 2011. PDF Print E-mail

From September 2010 until December 2010 total donations came to 1,284,000 won or around $1,150 US.

After looking at some issues KARA was involved with, we decided to allot the funds to 3 different causes.

1. Bansongwon Shelter

More kennels were needed at Bansongwon Shelter, so 600,000 won was donated toward that enterprise. The construction costs were 2,990,000 won altogether. Other contributors came from naver.com's Happy Bean and from the proceeds of Marie Cat's (Korea illustrator) exhibition.

Source Won
Donations from the KARA English site 600,000
Happy Bean sponsorship 1,814,960
Proceeds from Marie Cat's exhibition 500,000
Remainder from KARA's shelter budget 75,040

Here are the kennels in various stages of construction:

2. Jaram's Vet Bills

We contributed 500,000 won towards Jaram's huge vet bill. Five months of treatment including hospitalization, dressings, surgeries and medicine came to 4,500,000 won.

For those who don't know the story, Jaram was the victim of a hit and run in the summer of 2009, which left her paralysed. She has since had many medical problems. You can find out more of her story here.

3. Happy Nest Shelter Medicines and Shampoos.

The remaining 184,000 won was spent on medical shampoos and medicines, which were delivered on a volunteer day (February 13, 2011).

Medicinal shampoos: 90,000 won

Snacks for dogs, plus eye and ear cleaners: 118,730 won

Emergency medical kit: 19,000 won.

2010 September Donation Goes to Rescued Dogs PDF Print E-mail

kapca_rescuedogs.4

As of September, the total in donations to this site for the year stood at around $1000--more than all of last year's total--thanks to some truly generous donors! We've decided to give half of that to the Korean Alliance for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals as they were instrumental in rescuing the dogs at an Incheon dog-farm.

KAPCA was put under financial strain with the need to expand shelter facilities and feed extra dogs after the rescue. The KARA Korean site decided to match our site's donation, so KAPCA received 1 million won in total. KAPCA spent the money on food that will help them through the winter.

And here's what a million won's worth of dog food looks like!

kapca_donation_food

Thanks again to the generous donors to this site! Your donation towards helping KAPCA's shelter and the rescued dog-farm dogs now living there is greatly appreciated.
